How to Improve your Golf Score!

Utah Courses

February 3, 2010

One of the main reasons why people love to golf is the diversity of courses.  Utah has some of the most unique golf courses in the world where you can play any elevation within just a couple hours.

At TalonsCove, we remembered something that most golf courses have forgotten…that golf is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. utahfairways pictures 003 Utah CoursesWatching a birdie putt roll across our smooth greens will be exciting but the views across Lake Utah are so beautiful that you might forget to look at the ball as it drops in the hole. That’s our idea of fun at TalonsCove…the combination of excellent conditioning, a playable layout, and wonderful views. And all for a green’s fee that’s extremely competitive.

For the Best Conditioning We Close in the Winter

Many courses, in fact most public courses, open in the winter. We close from roughly December to March. Why? So the course is not incurring damage while dormant and unable to recover. When the course opens in the early spring, our bluegrass fairways and our bentgrass greens are in great shape and they stay that way all year. The result? Smooth and true greens (no poa annua) plus an excellent lie in the fairway. Call (801) 407-3030 to book a tee time and enjoy excellent conditioning.

A Modern Layout Built for You

When TalonsCove owner Doug Horne hired Gene Bates, he provided some explicit instructions: “make it fun for the majority of golfers who are going to be our guests, specifically ‘weekend’ golfers from Salt Lake City and Provo who want a public course that’s enjoyable.”

Bates followed his instructions while still managing to add some serious challenge. How about the 6th, a 260-yard par-3! Par this hole and you’ll have something to talk about for several months. Want to see if you can par this epic hole?

You Be the Judge!

If you have played a lot of golf in Utah and especially in the Salt Lake City and Provo areas, then you owe it to yourself to answer the question above and the questions below.

Was the golf course in excellent condition from tee to green and does it look like they really benefit from closing during the winter—especially in the spring?

Did I like the challenging par-3’s, especially the 260-yard 6th with the green seemingly perched right in the lake?

When I had a par on that hole, the second hardest in Utah, did I get a big thrill?

Did I feel that utahfairways pictures 005 Utah Coursesthe par-4’s and par-5’s were sensible? Did I feel that if I had a chance at a par or even a birdie on most of them?

Did I enjoy that?

Did the links-style layout make me feel like I was in Scotland?

Were the views amazing?

Was the 9th and 18th double-green cool?

Were the greens sensibly-paced and true all day long?

Did I play for free on my birthday?

I love Southern Utah courses.  The red rock and red sand is such a great natural contrast to enhance any golf course in the area. Any hole would make a great picture.

Sunbrook  St. George, Ut

The Wood Bridge nine features two of the most recognizable golf holes in southern Utah. The 4th hole is a par 3 with an elevated tee shot to an island green. The island green is generous in size but it is still no consolation to golfers wishing to avoid dumping that new Titleist into the water. And if an island green isn’t enough, the par-4 5th hole has more in store for you. From the tee the famous wood bridge is visible just beyond the landing area. The hole requires a well-placed tee shot between water hazards and sagebrush, all from an elevated tee. Once you find the landing area, you will face a long approach shot into a well-guarded green. The newest addition to Sunbrook is the Black Rock nine. With three holes carved from lava fields, Black Rock puts a premium on accuracy. Black Rock has improved the overall playing experience at Sunbrook resulting in an unmatchable variety of championship golf holes. Pointe/Woodbridge: Par: 72, Yards: 6,818, Rating/Slope: 73.0/129

Coral Canyons Year-round warm and dry weather, beautiful natural scenery, and an abundance of recreational activities make southwestern Utah an obvious golf mecca. Coral Canyon Golf Course has taken advantage of this perfect location to create a stunning golf course.

Coral Canyons Set amidst the beauty and splendor of neighboring Zion National Park, and Pine Valley Mountain, Coral Canyon was designed to provide a rare opportunity for players to enjoy luxurious golf on the doorstep to some of the world’s most famed natural wonders. Other nearby attractions include the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and Bryce Canyon National Park.

Coral Canyon’s 7,029-yard, par-72 layout features 100 acres of turf, 55 sand bunkers, two lakes and a labyrinth of dry washes, offer players a variety of risk/reward opportunities critical to an exceptional golf experience.

Coral Canyons Typical of the challenges players face at Coral Canyon is the short par-three, 122-yard sixth hole. Seemingly “dropped” into the natural red rock outcroppings, this hole plays from a rocky tee box over a deep ravine on the left peppered with 20-foot redrock outcroppings.

Related Articles The par-five, 528-yard sixteenth hole is another challenge players face. This hole is nestled in a series of hills that roll down to a punchbowl green guarded in the right-hand front corner by a short bunker and on the left by two sharp ridges. A good drive and a sense of adventure will allow players a relatively clear shot to the green.

Coral Canyons Cut into the property’s mountainous terrain, Coral Canyon’s intimate clubhouse provides spectacular views of the front nine holes of the golf course, as well as Zion National Park and Pine Mountain, from its expansive picture windows. The clubhouse features a large golf shop, restaurant, and outdoor covered pavilion.
